Looking over old sketch books

I’m a compulsive sketcher and have kept notes and sketches in books for decades. What I’m not as compuslive at is revisiting what I’ve sketched or jotted down. Which defeats the point just a bit.

I’ve been correcting this oversight and looking through older stuff and realized I have ideas that are worthy to be fleshed out. Things I had completely forgotten about. Looking through these books after some time has passed gives me a better idea what to ignore and what might have potential.

There are good character names, story ideas, and gags that I expunged from my mind onto notebooks. They pile up. Looking back over them helps when I sit down to come up with something and just end up staring at the blank page.

Now that I’ve figured out some ways to do animation in a more timely fashion, there’s one idea that would be good for an animated short. But I’m not going to talk about that until it’s more developed.

If you keep notes or sketchbooks, remember to pick them up and look back at them.
