On yesterday’s live stream with Ceage she mentioned that she makes better art by not caring….sorta.
I’ve said the same thing before and people have misunderstood me. I’ve said online that not caring is the best way to be relaxed and, consequently, make better art/stories. The push-back that comes is “you should care about your craft!”
For years, I’ve realized that when I’m doing a commission, for example, I start out wanting to make it as good as possible. That makes me just a bit tense. The tenser your are, the worse things get. Then you make that wrong mark. That glorious mistake. Then you think, “well, I’m just gonna go with it.”
It always looks better afterwards. When we say “don’t care about it” the “it” isn’t art. It’s perfection.
Forget perfection. You’ll never get there. Relax and you’ll do much better.2
