Your sketchbook should be a place to stretch your mental muscles without fear. Jot short character bios next to your drawings. Thinking through the backgrounds of characters will help you figure out more about them. Even if you’re not a “writer” give a little thought to where your subject came from. How did their life impact them? What did their history and circumstances do to their appearance?
The sketchbook is your sandbox. Just play around.
