Practicing in the Margins

Sketches and Studies

I’m still trying to practice a more painterly look and figuring out what works for me. I inevitably try to do too much and the end result looks busy and overworked. Keeping things loose and simple seems to click with my brain a little better.

As a freelancer I’m always juggling multiple things that help pay for the groceries, but it’s also important to keep pushing myself in uncomfortable directions. I can get pretty frustrated when what I’m trying to do just isn’t working. But there’s no other way to get better. Or, if there is, I haven’t found it.

Even though I’m pressed for time, I still try and make time for practicing in the margins. In between finishing work and the half-hour before the family gets home. Or in between the last task on my to-do list and bed. The time is there, it just has to be used wisely.

Anyway, keep on keepin’ on.
