Today’s daily sketch is Hiccup from Dreamwork’s How to Train Your Dragon. Dragon’s were really making the rounds in movies and books a few years ago (we wrote one into Vex way before it became the thing to do, honest!)
This sketch was done with the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen, and it definitely flavors the drawing. It’s a good pen, but it can take a little getting used to if you use a regular brush a lot. The brush tip is pretty durable in that it doesn’t fray, but it does have this super fine point that extends just a little longer than is typical of a traditional brush. If you’re not careful you’ll find stray marks on your drawing. Once you get used to it there’s no problem and eventually you can use it for different effects. It’s pretty good for getting whisper thin lines. If you drag the edge of it, you can get some decent dry brush effects (which is how I did the rust and dirt on WALL-E the other day.)
Another daily sketch will be up tomorrow. In the meantime, you can go read my creator-owned graphic novel (written with Danny Paris), Deputy Witch. There’s no dragon in it, but I did draw a big pink bear at one point. There’s also a mime, but he gets punched.
